He was able to realize his passion through his trials in which he showed an object from different angles. In still life with fruit dish he created a shallow, compressed space that flattens the sculptural volumes of dish, glass, and fruit. In still life with apples and his many other paintings, cézanne concentrated on the visual and physical qualities of the paint and canvas and worked to capture the full complexity of how our eyes take in the sights before us. Cezanne’s still lifes, however—with their olive jars, lemons, and colorful printed cotton cloths—evoke a sense of place.
